UNSC Gladiator-class light cruiser by SplinteredMatt UNSC Gladiator-class light cruiser by SplinteredMatt
The Gladiator-class light cruiser was a class of light cruisers utilised by the United Nations Space Command, which served between 2617 and 2678 and saw major action during the Galactic War and later Swarm War. The class was initially conceived during the Human-Covenant War as a replacement for the aging Halcyon-class light cruiser, to fill the capability gap between the UNSC's heavy destroyers and the Marathon-class heavy cruiser. The design was eventually shelved in favour of increased Marathon production, and it was only when UNSC designers revisited the plans in 2611 that work began on the Gladiator-class in earnest. Introduced in 2617, during a time of increasing galactic tension, the class served through the Galactic War just five years into its service. In 2633, immediately after this, vessels of the class participated in the Swarm War, which eventually gripped the galaxy until 2678.

The Gladiator-class was designated a light cruiser as a result of its comparatively thin armour; and armament of one light and one medium MAC, rather than the two medium guns a heavier cruiser would have. Its light armour, combined with its oversized reactors and exhaust thrusters, gave it superb speed for a craft of its size. Despite this, the Gladiator-class was comparable in size to the Marathon- and Halcyon-class cruisers, with an overall length of 1054 metres. Crucially, The Gladiator-class shared the same interior 'honeycombed' design as its predecessors, enabling it to withstand astounding volumes of fire.

The Gladiator-class commonly operated with other UNSC Navy vessels as part of naval formations, for example leading destroyer squadrons or functioning in battle groups. However, they were also well suited to independent operation, patrolling borders and shipping routes and conducting raids on enemy territory. The class's long operational range and relative speed made it capable of operating alone for extended periods of time, and its strong weaponry and armour meant that it was able to overpower most hostile vessels it encountered.

It seems like with a ship of that size, more MAC cannons could be mounted frontally to increase its firepower.  It seems like once a ship fires the main weapon, it takes a long time to recharge, then putting more of the weapons on a forward mount could be effective.

But that would put more strain on the reactors, slowing the recharge time and possibly preventing the other MACs from firing altogether.

I feel like a ship that can travel faster than the speed of light would have a lot of power generation leftover to power the additional mac cannons, but in terms of halo lore, I am afraid I don't know much about it.
I did some research and found out that the ships use fusion reactors, which theoretically could produce a lot of power.  However the halo universes power output of a fusion reactor seems to be defined as enough power to keep a mjolnir armor suit powered for fifteen years.  If that means with the shields fully activated on the suit, then that could be a lot of power.

Actually I think the halcyon class had a system that collects and recycles energy spent in firing a MAC round.

Crap! 5.2M short tons and this is a "light cruiser?" What are battle ships? 15M tons?

It's based on the armor thickness, not the overall weight of the craft

Most naval ships use displacement. Real aircraft carriers are like 100,000 tons. But, fictional spaceships can of course use anything. :)

Thanks for the two-year-old reply! :D

Yeah, I may have to change that depending on how my other cruiser classes turn out, when I eventually design them.

Don't worry about it! The engine section of this ship is virtually a direct copy of Bungie's Halcyon-class, so doesn't belong to me :)

While it's easy to see where the individual parts are inspired from (Halcyon at the back, Frigate arm at the front) it's pretty well composed and looks far more original than most fanon lineart i see for Halo. Well done.

The back half is more or less an exact copy from the Halcyon as it appeared in Reach, and the front was made to look more like the frigate than canon cruisers, so you're right on both of those. Thanks for the input!
